Koparki in Jaworzno — a guide to the underwater objects

Koparki is a former quarry, now filled with clear, calm water. There are no currents here, no waves, no boats overhead. What it does offer is something a swimming pool never can: real objects to explore and natural "stations" where it is easy to learn. It is 40 minutes from Katowice, yet it feels like a little expedition.

The mining excavator (~8 m)

The symbol of this place and usually the first "object" you will see. Its large, distinctive shape emerging from the blue is genuinely impressive, and at the same time it sits at a comfortable depth. It is the perfect target for your first real descent — you have something to look at and somewhere to swim toward — and your attention shifts on its own, out of your head and onto what is in front of you.

The "Wilhelm" wreck (~15 m)

Your first real wreck exploration — a moment many divers remember for years. We only go down to it once you feel confident on the shallower objects. No rushing: this wreck is not going anywhere, and you should come to it ready and calm.

Koparki is kind to beginners: calm water, clearly visible objects, short routes back to the surface. It is hard to imagine a better classroom.

The truck and the platforms (~12 m)

Natural training "stations". This is where we calmly practise buoyancy and orientation — there is something for your eyes to hold on to and plenty of points of reference, which helps a great deal when you are still learning to trust the water.

The tunnel (~10 m)

An object for more advanced divers, with four emergency exits. I mention it so you know there is room to grow — but the tunnel comes much later, step by step and only with the right training.

• Water temperature in season: ~17°C — we dive with the right thermal protection.
• Coordinates: 50°11′N · 19°16′E, about a 40-minute drive from Katowice.
• Still, sheltered water — none of the waves and currents of open water, so it is easy to stay calm.
