Scuba diving near Kraków — a diving course in English, one hour away

Living in Kraków and want to learn to dive in English? The closest place I teach is the flooded Koparki quarry in Jaworzno, about an hour’s drive along the A4. Here is how it works, what it costs to start and what you will see underwater.

If you are looking for scuba diving near Kraków, the short answer is this: I teach try dives and diving courses in English at the flooded Koparki quarry in Jaworzno, about an hour from Kraków along the A4 motorway. Lessons are one-on-one or for two people at most, a try dive starts from 400 PLN with gear included, and you can go on to a certificate that is recognised at dive centres worldwide. I am Bartłomiej Bartnicki, an IDF instructor, and my approach is simple: calm, patient and never in a hurry.

Where to scuba dive near Kraków

To learn to dive properly you need open water, not just a pool. Koparki is a former quarry, now filled with clear, calm water: no currents, no waves and no boats overhead. Its biggest draw for beginners is what lies beneath — real objects at comfortable depths that turn every dive into a small expedition. Getting there is easy: around an hour west on the A4, which makes it a comfortable half-day or day trip from Kraków.

A diving course in Kraków in English — how it works

Everything happens in English: the first phone call, the theory, the briefings at the water’s edge, the hand signals and the debrief after each dive. You will not have to piece together instructions in a second language while you are also getting used to breathing underwater. I work one-on-one or 1:2, so you can come alone or with a partner or friend.

  • Try dive — about 2 hours, 0–12 m, all gear included, from 400 PLN. No certificate or experience needed.
  • Open Water Diver (OWD) — under the IDF standard, at least 6 dives (a minimum of 250 minutes underwater), certification to 20 m, from the age of 15.
  • Advanced Open Water Diver — the next step after OWD and specialities, with dives down to 30 m.

For the try dive and the basic courses I provide the gear. Course prices beyond the try dive I set individually after a short conversation, because they depend on your experience and what you want to achieve. The full OWD course is described in the OWD course — what to expect.

Looking for a PADI course in Kraków? Here is the honest picture

Many people search for a PADI course in Kraków simply because PADI is the best-known diving brand. I teach under IDF (International Diving Federation), which is smaller and less familiar. Both federations train to the same ISO 24801 standards, so Open Water Diver with IDF is the same level as Open Water Diver with PADI — with one practical difference: IDF Open Water Diver certifies you to 20 m, PADI to 18 m. The IDF certificate has a number, is verifiable and is recognised at dive centres worldwide — and, whichever card you hold, it is worth asking a dive centre which certificates it accepts before you travel.

If the PADI logo specifically matters to you, that is a fair choice. If what matters more is a patient instructor, a tiny group and enough time in the water, I explain the differences calmly in IDF vs PADI — an honest comparison.

What you will see underwater at Koparki

  • a mining excavator (~8 m) — the symbol of the place and usually your first target,
  • a tunnel with four exits (~10 m),
  • a sunken Ford and a truck (~12 m),
  • the “Wilhelm” wreck and a second excavator (~15 m),
  • Rząpie, the deepest point of the quarry (~18 m).

On a try dive we stay within 0–12 m, and only as deep as you want. More about each object in the guide to the underwater objects at Koparki.

Planning your day trip from Kraków

Because I teach one-on-one, we agree dates individually — weekends included. In season the water is around 17°C, which is comfortable in a well-fitted wetsuit; in winter it drops to 4–6°C, so I recommend your first dive in the warmer part of the year. Bring swimwear, a towel, flip-flops, warm clothes for afterwards and something to drink. Before the dive you fill in a short health statement; some medical conditions require a doctor’s approval, so if you are unsure, get in touch before booking.

An hour in the car, then a calm morning at the water. You come home with your first breath underwater behind you.

Start with a try dive

The simplest first step is a try dive at Koparki: from 400 PLN, gear included, and the amount is credited towards the OWD course if you decide to continue. Wondering what happens minute by minute? Read what your first try dive really looks like.

Call or message me with any questions — in English, with no pressure and no hard sell. When you are ready, we will find a date that suits your drive from Kraków.
